New Podcast Discoveries: Female Hosts Volume 2

Favorite Podcasts with Female Hosts Volume 2

A few weeks ago, I went to BlogHer18 and one of the breakout sessions was about developing your own podcast. The session was hosted by Kristen Meinzer, a co-host of Panoply's By the Book Podcast and the two hosts of Betches Podcast. In the session, Kristen pointed out that there will always be those who simply don't want to listen to women's voices.

Unfortunately, I agree. However, that only empowers me even more to continue supporting and lift podcasts that are hosted by women.

Luckily for us there are SO MANY to advocate for. So many, in fact, that this is the second post I am sharing of my favorite new discoveries. I'm excited about this list because each of them are so different, which goes to show how complex and diverse our experiences and interests are.

What are some of your favorite podcasts with female hosts? Share in the comments below! I love to discover new ones every day.

Mothers of Invention

mothersofinventionpodcast

"Climate change is a man-made problem — with a feminist solution! Join former Irish President Mary Robinson and comedian Maeve Higgins in this uplifting new podcast, celebrating amazing women doing remarkable things in pursuit of climate justice. Each episode features the Mothers of Invention driving powerful solutions to climate change – from the grassroots to the court room, the front lines to the board room – all over the world."

I first learned of Maeve when I got an advanced copy of her new book, Maeve in America. I also recently got her book signed at Books are Magic and she promoted both her book and new podcast, Mothers of Invention! I immediately subscribed and listened to episode 1 the next day. It's such a fresh perspective on climate change and coming from an international point of view has helped me learn a LOT.

By the Book

bythebookpodcast

"By The Book is half reality show, half self-help podcast, and one wild social experiment. Join comedian Jolenta Greenberg and speaker and producer Kristen Meinzer as they live by the rules of a different self-help book each episode to figure out which ones might actually be life changing."

This is one of the coolest podcast structures I listen to. Co-hosts Kristen and Jolenta spend a couple of weeks doing the steps in a book and reflecting on it. They've done books like A Girl's Guide to Joining the Resistance, The Curated Closet, and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. They share audio notes of the experience within each episode and give their reviews at the very end. It's amazing to hear the reflections of books that we all read but may not put what we learn into action. After each episode, they have an Epilogue episode that is filled with listener comments and discussions in their Facebook groups. It's awesome that they incorporate even more perspectives too, and I learn so much more.

Bodies

bodiespodcast

"Each episode of this intimate, highly-produced documentary program follows one person’s journey to solve a mystery about their body. Bodies explores the forces of history, society and identity that shape women's health and affect the way the medical community treats people. For so long, women’s health has been under-researched and overlooked. So often, our stories have gone untold and our questions have gone unanswered. Bodies is part of a movement to change that."

I attended a launch event at The Wing with host Allison Behringer. At first I honestly wasn't sure if I'd be interested but the stories and quality of each show are incredibly crafted. The experiences of the women in these episodes have health mysteries that could affect any of us. And as a healthcare professional I didn't realize how invaluable the personal and emotional impact of diseases can have on women. This has quickly become one of my favorites.

Under the Hood

underthehoodpodcast

"Under the Hood is pulling back the curtain and unpacking the mystery around womanHOOD, sisterHOOD, motherHOOD. Join Patti and Aleks as they take a deep dive into the topics you wish you knew more about, the topics you want to share with your daughters, and the things you want the men in your life to know."

I love a podcast that talks about women's sexuality. Under the Hood is so much more than that! It combines experiences with science on topics like women's orgasms and oral contraceptives. It's only two episodes in but I'm completely hooked.

Girl Boner Radio

girlbonerradio

"A spicy blend of personal stories, in-depth reporting and inspiration, Girl Boner is where good girls go for sexual empowerment. Health and sexuality writer August McLaughlin explores female sexual pleasure like no one else. She’s the fearless sister/girlfriend you’ve always wanted—and she loves to talk sex! Girl Boner Radio is LGBTQIA-friendly and all genders are welcome."

Speaking of podcasts about women's sexuality... Girl Boner Radio is just that. The show touches topics that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing out loud, but I'm trying to work on that. And this podcast helps.

Committed Podcast

committedpodcast

"Host Jo Piazza as she delves into the hilarious, heartbreaking and inspiring stories of couples of all kinds who’ve soldiered through unimaginable circumstances, and after the longest of days, still want to wake up next to one another in the morning."

On this podcast, it's incredible to learn about stories of marriages that open my eyes to so many kinds of love between two people. It's refreshing to hear such positivity, happiness, and honesty in relationships that we don't see in mainstream media.

Ask A Manager Podcast

askamanagerpodcast

"Need expert advice on handling workplace dilemmas and dramas? Alison Green, founder of the popular website AskAManager.org, is here to help you resolve your toughest, most frustrating, or just plain weirdest work predicaments. Each week, she takes calls and talks directly with listeners about how to successfully tackle clueless coworkers, toxic bosses, impossible employees, crazy clients, and much more."

I love that this show has a female host to discuss topics where people need help with their career. People call in needing advice about things like having a lazy coworker, wanting more feedback from their boss, feeling burnt out at work, and if they are being a mansplainer. I don't listen to every episode but if one is particularly applicable, I'm all about it. Check out the episode list to see which applies to you!

At Home With... Podcast

athomewithpodcast

"‘At Home With…’ is the podcast series that’s part ‘Through The Keyhole' and part having a good ol’ catch-up on the sofa with your mates, brought to you by online content creators Lily Pebbles and Anna Newton. The two seasons of their chart-topping podcast see them interview a whole bevy of guests in the comfort of their own home."

Lily Pebbles and Anna Newton are some of my favorite YouTubers and they made a podcast! What's unique about this show is that they go to other creators' homes to discuss their craft and chat about what home means to them. It's a nice escape to listen to how others live and Lily and Anna are always so upbeat that it uplifts my mood every time.
